The famous entomologist Jean-Henri Fabre (1823-1915) moved to this house in Sérignan in 1879. He dedicated his life to the study of insects and flora, and his garden became his laboratory. Today, his garden is classified as a 'Jardin remarquable' (Remarkable garden).

With a surface area of around 9000 m2 and retaining the same architectural plan as it did years ago, this decorative garden and arboretum is a true paradise of plants and insects. More than 500 species of Mediterranean plants as well as two ponds are the home of land and water-based insects that fascinated the famous entomologist.

In 1922, the National Natural History Museum purchased the entire estate. The collections left by the scientist include fossils and minerals, manuscripts, printed material and a few boxes of insects. There are also two exclusive collections - watercolour paintings of mushrooms and an exceptional herbarium.
