During the Augustan period (early 1st century), a splendid Roman villa stood on this site, extending over 12,000 m². Several archaeological digs have led experts to think that this luxurious property must have belonged to a high ranking architect. The sunken garden with its 65 m long pond, the largest and best preserved in Roman Gaul, reveal the splendour of this period.

The location of the villa and garden, opposite the Via Domitia, close to the Durance river, was no coincidence.
Nowadays, the botanical garden, designed around the pond, has succeeded to recreate the atmosphere of this richly symbolic period. In fact, there are 8 themed gardens, each dedicated to an ancient deity. The pond remains the site’s key archaeological feature, on account of its size and the 55,000 small, multi-coloured, clay bricks used to construct it.
